The World Health Organization has officially declared the coronavirus a public health emergency of international concern.

WHO officials made the declaration this week amid a fast-growing number of people who have either died from the disease or who have confirmed cases.

The virus was first detected in Wuhan, China

Due to evidence of person-to-person transmission cases outside China — including one in the United States — health care officials have been prompted to take the outbreak more seriously.

At least 213 people have died from the disease, with more than 9,700 cases confirmed worldwide.
