I learned firsthand the power of state law enforcement in my area. They wipe their shoes with our constitution. It means nothing if it means calling out one of their own. No citizens question their actions. No lawyer takes up a Constitutional rights case against them. There is backlash for that. They are extremely well-funded, unchallenged by the people in rural community left to operate in an opaque manner entirely unaccountable to anyone outside their own troop. They are paid very high salaries. Don’t wear body cams. Extremely well protected legally. Thumb their noses at FOIL requests. Engage in malicious investigations of a retaliation for anyone who challenges them because they have the power and resources to do so. Every year the governor allocates more funding on top of the hundreds of millions they already get so they don’t need federal grants like other precincts do to hold them accountable and maintain transparency.
